2024 National Children's Month Celebration
The chosen theme for 2024 National Children’s Month (NCM) is centered around the campaign “Break the Prevalence, End the Violence: Protecting Children, Creating a Safe Philippines.” This theme rekindles the challenges that a good number of children go through by way of abuse, neglect or even exploitation. Research shows that violence towards children is likely to cause emotional, mental wise as well as physical more often than not impediments to their potential of growing up confident and useful in the society. The main objective of this theme is to give a voice to the children’s issues that are often silenced. It stresses the need to build a supportive and protective environment for children where they feel safe, cared for, and encouraged.
In this thematic area the focus is on the sufficiency of legal and institutional frameworks for the children’s protection. In the Philippines, there have been laws proposed for the protection of children such as the Anti-Violence Against Women and Children Act (RA 9262) and the Special Protection of Children Against Abuse, Exploitation and Discrimination Act (RA 7610). However, there are issues with enforcement. This occasion encourages stricter enforcement, better supervision and increased child and family care services. It also highlights the importance of providing parents and caregivers with safe and nurturing places for their children when at school, in their community and any other public places.
In addition, the aspect of education and awareness in crime relevancy is vital. It is important to have initiatives which educate children about their rights and how to protect themselves. At the same time, there is a need for training for parents, teachers and community heads on how to detect abuse and provide intervention. The campaign also calls attention to the importance of mental health and counseling services in addressing children’s trauma. The theme also hopes that cooperation between the government, the private sector and civil society will help in building a Philippines where children are free from violence and live with respect.

This year’s NCM, it is also an opportunity to participate in the community work, which, for instance, comprises such activities as workshops, seminars, as well as artistic activities which are dedicated to promoting children’s rights. These initiatives create awareness and empower both children and adults in the fight against violence. The theme is a call to action for everyone to play their part in creating a better and safer tomorrow; it tells all of us that caring for children is not only about meeting their basic needs but also about safeguarding their development in a world that is not hostile to their being.
